A Bit Of History About General Richardson
In June of 1943 Robert Richardson was promoted to Lt. General and given command of the Hawaiian Department, which included being the Military Governor of Hawaii, and commanding General of U.S. Forces Pacific Ocean Area. As the Administrative Commander, Richardson oversaw all the Army's planning, logistical preparation, training, and force deployment efforts as part of the U.S. Joint Forces island-hopping campaign. This campaign ultimately led to surrender of Japan. It was also during this time that General Richardson oversaw the construction of Richardson Hall, also known as the “Pineapple Pentagon” in 49 days, which is still in use today. His trained Army ground and air forces fought in all the major central and mid-Pacific battles. General Robert Richardson had the honor of standing in the front row of senior leaders who witnessed Japan's formal surrender on the deck of the Battleship USS Missouri.
