Headline Gen. Pierce Is Wounded in Fighting in the Philippines. From The New York Times By The Union Press:
Washington, Feb. 3— The first general to be wounded in action since the United States entered the war was revealed today to be Brig. Gen. Clinton A. Pierce.
He suffered slight wounds in the recent fighting in the Philippines, General Douglas MacArthur reported. He is one of the colonels who was promoted to brigadier general last week.
Pierce, who is 47, was born in Brooklyn. He served on the Mexican border in 1916. He was sent to the Twenty-sixth Cavalry at Fort Stotensburg, Philippine Islands, on Jan. 31 1940.
General Pierce took part in the defense of Corregidor. Taken prisoner of war by the Japanese in April 0f 1942 and participated in the Bataan death march. After almost 40 months of captivity General Pierce was liberated in August of 1945.
