In December of 1944 during the Battle Of The Bulge Bruce Clarke was convinced that Saint Vith with its road networks would be vital to hold and if possible stop the thrust of the Germans onslaught. Clarke leading Combat Command B of the 7th Armored held his position at St. Vith from Dec 17 through Dec 23 until ordered to withdraw. Historian Russell Weigley said that "more than any other of the many defensive stands in the Ardennes... it was the battle of St. Vith that bought the time required by Allied generalship to recapture control of the battle."
