Taken from the book Command Missions a Personal Storyby Lt. General Lucian Truscott. “Road maintenance and repair imposed enormous burdens upon the army engineers. Floods washed away temporary repairs and bridges. Landslides frequently blocked roads. Snow plows were in almost continuous use. Engineer assistance was required to move. Stalled vehicle vehicles. Traffic congestion made road maintenance extremely difficult. Nevertheless, in the face of all these obstacles, Brigadier General Frank Bowman and his engineers, employing all available road building and maintenance equipment, the labor of hundreds of soldiers, and thousands of Italian laborers kept the roads open and steadily improved them in preparation for the spring offensive. No troops in the army perform more valiant work than the engineers.”
